RACEWARS was on again last weekend at the Wyalkatchem Airstrip, and as i didn’t go last year it was the first time i ventured that far out to a meet without knowing what to expect. luckily the organiser and helpers pointed me in the right direction so at least i could make a start!
And seeing as i got there late Saturday arvo there really wasn’t much for me to do as i missed just about everything that day, oh well, park up at the oval, pitch my tent amongst the 100 or so others and find some friends to have dinner with at the pub!
i heard that a few people went down on the Saturday for a look see but went home that night, i think you should stay there and make it a weekend deal, camping is good on the oval and the bowls club and pub have meals and drinks to keep you going all night, though i think a few wished they hadn’t 😉
Up again at sparrows fart and take in the sunrise with a few pics while nearly everyone else was still asleep then head off to the track for some early sunday shots before it got going again.
Didn’t take long for people to arrive and start things moving, having a coffee van going that early was really welcomed!! once i found a space
for me to sit for the day i don’t think i moved from there much, definitely going to the other side of the track next year as the shadows were a pain, may see if i can set up a shade tent so at least some of the other photogs can get some shade out there as the heat was a little warm. mind you it wasn’t that hot considering where we are but an esky with some cold drinks is definitely on the cards!
The running of the event was quite quick with little time between runs so it didn’t make for a long day which is good, and not a single accident to hold proceedings back.. much. well there was a couple of ‘offs’ when someone forgot to brake at the end of the straight plus that ‘over exuberant’ fan down the end, but i think the crowd seemed to take it all in their stride plus it was a welcomed break for a drinks run.
All in all for only the second time this event has been run and with the great help from the local council and volunteers plus a great team of guys and girls i can only think this event will get better with every year, and with word of some interstate rivalry next year, who knows how big it can get! as long as myself and/or Ryan can cover it i think it will a great weekend away from the city and watch some fast cars going flat out! may even get the esky and do some esky racing in between, now there’s an idea!!!
big cheers to Anthony Scali for his R32 getting the top spot with 306.66 kph, just edging out Caillim Betts doing 292.03 in his ’93 supra and Jose Jardim going 290.18kph!
see ya out there DB.
