Double demerit penalties for the Western Australia Day long weekend

Note: Double demerit penalties for the Western Australia Day long weekend apply from Friday 29 May to Monday 1 June 2015 (inclusive).

The Office of Road Safety wishes to remind all motorists that double demerit penalties will be enforced by WA Police on road users engaging in dangerous activities while driving this WA Day long weekend.

Since they were introduced to WA in 2002, independent evaluations of the double demerits system have determined there were fewer road crashes when the initiative was in place – which aligns with its overall objective in reducing road trauma on our State’s roads.

Motorists should be aware that as of midnight tonight, Thursday 28 May, double demerits apply across the State for the following offences:

  • Speeding;
  • Drink or drug driving;
  • Failing to wear a seat belt and/or child restraint;
  • Running a red light; and
  • Illegal use of a mobile phone while driving.

WA Police will be out enforcing double demerits this long weekend to help stop risk taking behaviour and to protect the majority of the community who do the right thing on our roads.

More information on double demerits is available on the Road Rules & Penalties page

new window.
